Product cultures. Just a thought. Not only should you work with the development of products with the users in mind but also consider the whole organisational culture from which such products derive. Products not only needs to express its purpose – it also bears the imprints of the culture of whom produced it – down to the individual inspirational force. It is the quality of that cultural setting that ultimately decides the quality of the finished product. After deadline: I read an interview on designboom with Product Designer Yves Béhar. When asked about "an evolution in your work from your first project until today". His answer pretty much adds to my above argument, and should for now speak for itself: "Currently I'm trying to make technology disappear. In 1999, I said ‘design brings stories to life’, The idea that products were the true agents of a brand, I remember these were the virtual and advertising days, and this point of view differentiated us: most US based design agencies were only focused on technology and medical products, two areas who never understood the value of connecting to consumers emotionally and building brands people love (to the exception of apple of course). So I applied our design and technical skills to exciting consumer brands such as MINI cooper and birkenstock, and we were able to grow our team in the technology downturn." Løsningen var at gå igennem iMovie på Mac. Importér AVIfilm og eksportér som Quicktime. Se videoskitse her. Læs mere om projektet filmen knytter sig til her. The big interface and how I became an Experience Designer One day I was late, heading for the train. I had no ticket yet. But the ticket office was closed, and it was not possible to buy it in the store, as it was a local trip. I still had a little time though to aquire my ticket in the new ticket machine. But the interface was not clear to me, and I got frustrated with it. Especially when I finally succeeded in printing the correct ticket for my trip, and I could not get it out. What I learned from this experience was that I started interfacing with the system long before I even got to the ticket-machine. There were a lot of barriers in the design of purchasing a ticket. So when selling tickets, one have to consider the whole system - and the interaction with it. You design the situation, the layout, the machines to support it - the whole experience around helping and empower the user to succesfully reach a preferred goal. Its the big interface. Whether in 2D or 3D you design for experience. That is why I like the title of Experience Designer, as it encompasses all my competencies as a designer. |
